Spotlight Interview: Yeya

What is your name, and where are you from? My name is Yeya. I was born in Massachusetts, and I moved to Los Angeles 3 years ago to pursue music. When did you start in the music industry, and what type of music do you create? I have a background in musical theatre, where I learned to sing, but I started writing my own music after I graduated high school in 2014. Then in 2018, I began taking production classes and learning how to use Ableton. I love to create pop, EDM, R&B and rap. I don't really think about a genre when I begin production on a song, I just create something I love and choose the label later. This results in a lot of tracks that blur the genre line and take my favorite aspects from each type of music.

What do you feel is the importance of music in today’s media, such as YouTube, television, film, etc? Youtube TV and film ignite that spark of curiosity about the song or the artist, leading to an outlet for us to connect and express ourselves. I believe music is trascendental. It invites us to rise above our current circumstances and emotions, and free our minds. And we can free our bodies through dance! Sometimes it can walk us through our deep emotions and help us feel seen and heard. Have you ever listened to Adele after a breakup? Ha! It can connect us with likeminded people, and form communities of fans that wouldn't have met otherwise. But it all starts with that first listen which is often through these forms of media.

What would you say is your biggest accomplishment and why? One of my biggest accomplishments was opening for 5 Seconds of Summer at The Sayers Club. At the time I didn't realize how huge they were. I spent a lot of time preparing, and I was hyper focused, but a few days before the show I finally looked them up on Youtube. I saw a bunch of songs I recognized from radio, one of them reaching 81 million views. Needless to say I was shocked and super excited! What upcoming projects are you working on, and any last words for the Rhythm Couture audience? I'm currently working on my EP, Monarch. We're releasing each song one at a time, and I'm really amped up for this project! Also, if you're curious about me or my music, check me out on any streaming platform and follow on IG @Yeyamusic. Thanks!
